Showing up to our habits even on the days we don’t feel like doing them can make the difference of a lifetime.
Last week, I stayed at my Uncle’s new home in Vittal. My cousins had come down from Mumbai after a long time and I decided to spend the week with them.
Unfortunately, it was very early in that week that I made a decision to slack off with my system of health-enhancing habits. Considering how important it is for me to stick to the system, this decision wasn’t a good one.
Although I was involved in having a good time with my relatives, I noticed that my anxious thought pattern was having a greater hold on me. This was disappointing as I couldn't be fully present to the activities happening at the time. Fortunately, being in the company of my loved ones ensured that I was living more and thinking less.
There is a certain power in being consistent with the habits that take us a step closer to our goals - the more frequent the habit, the faster we achieve the goal.

This doesn’t mean we beat ourselves up to make every habit perfect. It’s not one or two days of nailing our routine that makes the difference. Rather, it is the frequency over a period of time (like a week or a month or a year).
So, yes, it is ok to miss a habit once in a while. But, getting back on track shouldn’t take us longer than this. Showing up to our habits on the days we don’t feel like moving a muscle is crucial too. This keeps up the momentum and our future self will thank us for doing so.
I measure my progress by scoring my habits. The total score for the week is calculated every Sunday, and I see if the week’s total is getting closer or farther away from the overall score.
Progress is one of the best feelings there is. The only way we can ensure this progress is by taking more steps forward and fewer steps back.
