More often than not, expectations lead to disappointment. Life is uncertain, and this uncertainty is a cue for us to understand that our expectations may not be fulfilled.
When I experienced life going downhill for me, I panicked and expected things to change at the earliest. My focus was on wanting something different to happen. Even now, I expect a particular outcome. But life always seems to have a different plan.
Expectations do not always carry positive energy with them. They are future-oriented thought patterns that we create. Wanting life to happen a certain way is unnecessary energy and time wasted. How many times have we been left unhappy by unmet expectations?
Life goes on the way it is supposed to even when we do not expect anything. By expecting something, we only add more suffering to our lives. Why create unnecessary suffering when we already get our fair share?
Trade your expectations for appreciation and see your entire world change.
- Tony Robbins
While expectations are focused on an outcome that may or may not happen, appreciation is focused on what we already have. Appreciation comforts and fills us with a sense of ease and contentment. This is because we send signals that we are grateful for whatever life throws our way. After all, life is happening for us and not to us.
My frustration towards suffering is turned into joy when I focus on how far I’ve come and the progress I am making. This rekindles my self-confidence and I feel proud of powering my way through life.
Turning expectation into appreciation creates positive energy within and around us. We become more accepting of the circumstances of our lives and we are able to create a perspective that serves us. This makes us more attractive and pleasant to be around as well.
