The Power Of Language
Language is the most powerful means of giving expression to our reality. It plays a huge role in how we perceive the world, and we use this perception to navigate through life. Two individuals can have a totally different way of looking at things.
We use language to create or destroy our world. One can say “ life sucks”, based on a few negative events, or say “I chose to be happy and learn from these events”.
We are meaning-making machines and we give our world its meaning through language.
When it comes to asking an individual how their day was, one negative event can make a significant difference to their sentence. They may say “Oh, my day was bad.” This phrase can bring about a feeling of sadness and frustration.
On the contrary, saying “Oh, my day was good and this happened”, can leave you feeling content and peaceful. Here, we don’t change the reality of our day, we just change the way we chose to look at it. A simple change in the structure of the sentence does the trick.
Some of us have a habit of putting ourselves down and lowering our standards by saying things like, “I am stupid” or “I am anxious”. Changing the “am” to “feel” in those statements gives us the space to deal with our current reality with more clarity and power.
What you declare after “ I am” can make or break you.
It is safe to say that there is no inherent meaning to life. Since we are the ones who create the stories, why not create those that leave us feeling empowered.
How I Relate To The Power Of Language
With the challenging patterns of anxiety and worry that I have, one destructive thought can build on another and leave me feeling miserable.
To live life on my terms, I have made a declaration that, “I am powerful and energetic”. This is the emotional home that I connect myself to whenever I notice myself getting carried away by negative thoughts. The more I internalize this and involve my body to feel so, the easier it is for me to deal with whatever comes my way.
By being the author and creator of your destiny, use language in a way that serves you.
