Setting SMART Goals

I once heard someone say that the purpose of life is to ‘Enjoy it’. This has stuck with me ever since.

I recently came across the concept of ‘SMART goals’ from my therapist. This is when I decided to break down the goal ‘Enjoy life’ into something that is SMART — Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. I came up with three declarations as a result of this. I wish to achieve these by the end of this year.

1. Gain Muscle Mass 

I have been around 56.5 Kgs for a while now. I check my weight every Sunday and it feels disappointing to see it the same. Some underlying factors like stress and not eating enough for the amount of workout I do are factors preventing me from gaining. I wish to hit 60 kgs by the end of this year. 

2. Finalize My Career Path

Although I have kept myself occupied up until now, I have not identified my primary line of interest with respect to my career. This is something I wish to achieve by December end. Along with this, I will finalize the place and company/course/internship that I want to be a part of.

3. Break Intrusive Thoughts At Will

If there’s one problem that I’d want to effectively handle, it’s my struggle with intrusive thoughts. At the moment, they tend to get powerful enough to drag me down with them. 

Going forward, I will consistently put into practice a few Intrusive Thought Tackling Techniques (IT3). They are:

• Cognitive Defusion — Creating a gap between myself and the thoughts to effectively get over them.

• Resonant Coherent Breathing — Breathing rhythmically, evenly, and through the heart every day. 

• Changing my posture to a more dominant one.

• Writing it out if it gets too overwhelming.

Making declarations public is a bold move and I needed to make it at this point. If I really want to enjoy my life, stepping up is the only way.
